Q&A: Looking for a Cushion or Round Cut Diamond for a Halo Setting for Under $3,500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

I am interested in an engagement ring from Blue Nile. I like the cushion cut halo with a cushion cut diamond. Would H color diamond look colorless to the naked eye?

H color looks absolutely colorless in most settings. I’m happy to recommend some options to you, can you just tell me if you’re looking for a square or rectangular cushion cut? And do you have a budget in mind?

I am looking for a square cushion cut. I would like to stay around $3,500 or under. I just want eye clean. I was worried about VS2 because I don’t trust myself to see inclusions or understand what to look for.

I found a couple of options that might suit you:
Blue Nile LD13750968
Blue Nile LD14063109

I searched in the H+ SI+ range and these two happened to be the best options I found there. The first diamond has the crushed ice look, the other one has classic faceting. Either of them would be very bright and brilliant in a halo setting.

I really liked the second diamond you recommended. LD14063109 but it sold before I was able to buy it. Can you please help me find one that is similar from Blue Nile?

Here’s a new option with the same look:

Do you think H is too low to go on color?

Not at all. Blue Nile uses I or H-color melee diamonds for their halo settings so there wouldn’t be any color difference.

Would you be able to find the same look in a higher color grade? Just curious to see the price difference if we could afford it.

I’m so sorry. I’m having a lot of trouble deciding what I want! I noticed they also have a halo that can be set with a round diamond. I know they are more expensive. Are there any that are at least .9 carat and eye clean in my budget?

Can you do Very good cut or should it be Ideal? And color grade for round?

Here are the cushion cuts you asked for:
Blue Nile LD14007956
Blue Nile LD14180113

For rounds, you should definitely stick with an Ex cut, if you want to get a good looking diamond. Normally, I wouldn’t go below an H color for a round diamond in a halo setting, but you can take advantage of the way Blue Nile’s settings are designed (I/H melee diamonds) and put an I color into it: Blue Nile LD14189414

Thank you! I ordered yesterday! The H color cushion! Thank you so much for your help!

That’s great news! It was an excellent option and I hope it will meet (or exceed) your expectations.
